Violet Made of Thorns est (encore) le premier roman d'une duologie fantasy où on suit Violet, une jeune voyante qui a trouvé sa place auprès du roi d'un grand royaume (j'ai oublié tous les noms de lieux, sorry). Violet n'est pas une personne très honnête ni très gentille. Très tôt, elle a appris, à la demande du roi, à modifier ses visions pour qu'elles s'alignent à la volonté expansionniste de celui-ci.  Comme une malédiction pèse sur le prince héritier et que la seule solution pour la contrer est qu'il se marie, le roi demande à Violet de "voir" la future épouse en la personne de Raya. Mais cette fausse vision entraîne bien des problèmes...

J'ai lu ce roman juste après This Vicious Grace et j'ai trouvé amusant de lire deux livres à la suite avec un personnage nommé Dante et une protagoniste qui ne peut pas toucher les gens. Evidemment, ici, Violet s'en abstient par politesse car quand elle touche les mains d'une personne, elle peut voir son passé et son futur.

J'ai apprécié ce livre sans plus, je l'ai trouvé fort répétitif, la relation haine-attirance (on ne peut pas vraiment parler d'amour ici) entre le prince et Violet prenait trop le dessus sur les intrigues politiques et n'était pas très crédible, il manquait des informations sur ce monde et les "plot twists" étaient trop brutaux et ensuite personne ne revenait dessus. Quand je posais le livre, je ne mourrais pas d'envie de le reprendre, et maintenant que je l'ai fini, je n'y pense pas souvent et même si je suis curieuse de voir ce qui va se passer quant à la malédiction et la forêt enchantée, je ne suis pas encore sûre que je lirai la suite.

En lisant d'autres avis sur ce roman, j'ai été assez surprise de voir que beaucoup le considéraient comme de la dark fantasy, je ne m'y connais pas vraiment dans ce genre et je l'imaginais plus...dark justement. A mon sens, il serait peut-être plus proche de la romantasy vu la place prépondérante de la relation entre Violet et Cyrus.

Violet Made of Thorns is (another) first book in a duology that follows Violet, a young seer who serves the king of a great kingdom (I forgot the names of all the places, sorry). Violet is not the most honest and kind person. She has learned very soon from the king himself to align her visions with his ambitions of expansionism. As the crow prince is cursed until he finds a bride, the king asks Violet to announce that Raya, a girl chosen by the king himself, is the future bride of the prince Cyrus. But by doing so, Violet unravels a lot of problems...

I read this novel just after This Vicious Grace and I found it funny that in both there were a character named Dante and a main character who couldn't touch anyone. Granted, Violet doesn't touch anyone's hands because she can read the past and the future of the person, so it's more polite to keep her hands to herself.

I liked the book but it wasn't the best. There were a lot of repetitions, the hate/lust relationship (can't call that love) between Cyrus and Violet was more important than the political schemes and wasn't very well done in my opinion, the worldbuilding lacked explanations and the "plot twists" were too sudden and never again mentionned by the characters. I wasn't dying to keep reading it and now that I have finished it, even though I'm kind of curious as how the story will evolve concerning the curse and the woods, I'm not yet sure that I will read the sequel.

I've read some reviews on Goodreads and NetGalley and was surprised to see that a lot of people said that Violet Made of Thorns is a dark fantasy. I don't know a lot about this genre but I expected it to be...darker? For me, it reads more like a romantasy since the relationship between Violet and Cyrus is so dominant.

  Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for the arc! This is the second volume of the Monsters trilogy by Vanessa Len (I assume it's a trilogy), the first was Only a Monster that I also read thanks to NetGalley. I had given it 5 stars and I was a little afraid to read the second volume, but it was really great! I had so much fun reading it and found myself reading it instead of sleeping. Without spoilers, I can say that it was interesting to see the characters from the first book in another environment, and I think that the author understands perfectly the world and rules she has created. And now for the spoilers! Joan was so clueless that it became funny. She didn't notice A THING while Nick saw everything, and the only explanation she found was that Nick had been trained to be a monster hunter and that had stayed within him in the new timeline. Infinity Gate - M.R. Carey

  Merci à NetGalley et à la ME pour ce SP (English below) J'avais déjà lu (et abandonné) un livre de cet auteur, Celle qui a tous les dons , mais j'avais vu la critique de l'excellente booktubeuse Willow sur sa chaîne Books and Bao qui m'avait vraiment intriguée, donc quand j'ai vu Infinity Gate sur NetGalley, je n'ai pas hésité. L'histoire est narrée à la première personne sans qu'on ne sache qui est lae  narrateurice, qui va présenter trois personnes : Hadiz Tambuwal, Topaz Tourmaline et Essien Nkanika. On rencontre d'abord Hadiz qui, dans une vaine tentative de sauver le monde qu'elle habite, va découvrir par hasard l'existence d'autres mondes, d'autres Terres, ainsi que le Pandominium, un consortium d'un nombre incalculable de mondes parallèles. Le principe du Pandominium m'a paru fascinant ! Dans ce tome, on voit un peu son fonctionnement, surtout celui de son armée, et le début de la guerre contre un consortium de monde

Come Home Safe - Brian G. Buckmire

  I gave this book 4 stars because I feel it is very important in our society, whatever the country. The author wants to give keys to Black people as how to navigate a world where racism and police brutality are so prevalent. As a novel, it isn't a really captivating or groundbreaking but I still feel it is a read that every non-white person should have. White people too, of course, to really understand how pernacious racism is. I wish the book was better written and the dialogues were more realistic, especially for young teenagers, but it still gave a good idea of what can happen to any non white person in the public space.
