Nous sommes au Caire en 1912. Cinquante ans plus tôt, al-Jahiz a transformé le monde en ouvrant un portail vers d'autres mondes d'où sont arrivées des créatures surnaturelles telles que les djinns, les gobelins, les goules, etc. Fatma travaille auprès du Ministère d'Alchimie, de Sortilèges et d'Entités supernaturelles et est chargée d'enquêtes dans lesquelles il y a un élément supernaturel. Dans ce livre, tous les membres d'une confrérie dédiée à al-Jahiz est tuée, les corps brûlés mais leurs vêtements sont restés intacts. Fatma enquête donc avec sa nouvelle partenaire Hadia et son amoureuse Siti.

Je ne suis pas très fan d'enquêtes, aussi la première partie du roman a été un peu difficile pour moi. Si je suis restée accrochée, c'est grâce au monde dépeint par l'auteur: une Egypte en pleine transformation, du steampunk, de la magie... Que demander de plus ? Une histoire pleine de rebondissements peut-être ?
Ce roman est le premier de l'auteur, même si celui-ci avait déjà écrit des nouvelles sur ce monde avec des personnages que l'on retrouve ici. Il n'est pas nécessaire d'avoir lu ces nouvelles avant de commencer A Master of Djinn, moi je ne l'avais pas fait et j'ai tout compris. Toutefois, je crois que je vais les lire très bientôt car j'ai très envie de me replonger dans ce monde et de comprendre toutes les références à une certaine enquête de Fatma.

In Cairo, 1912, djinns and other supernatural entities roam the city among humans thanks to the acts of al-Jahiz who opened a portal 50 years ago. One day, all the members of a brotherhood dedicated to al-Jahiz are murdered, their bodies burned while their clothes are still intact. This calls for an investigation by the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities. Here comes Fatma, an agent of this ministry who's gonna investigate alongside her new partner Hadia and her girlfriend Siti.

I'm not very fond of investigations but I was hooked to this story for its amazing worldbuilding : supernatural entities, magic, steampunk... There also were a lot of plot twists (I just saw one coming and was very proud) and the characters were well written. It was my first time reading a fantasy novel in a religious world (particularly muslim) and it was very well done in my opinion (but I don't know anything about this theme so I'm no one to talk).

This novel is the first from the author although he wrote some novellas in this same world with the same characters. I haven't read them before and understood everything but maybe it's more immersive if you read them beforehand ? Either way, I'm now curious to read them !

Never a hero - Vanessa Len

  Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for the arc! This is the second volume of the Monsters trilogy by Vanessa Len (I assume it's a trilogy), the first was Only a Monster that I also read thanks to NetGalley. I had given it 5 stars and I was a little afraid to read the second volume, but it was really great! I had so much fun reading it and found myself reading it instead of sleeping. Without spoilers, I can say that it was interesting to see the characters from the first book in another environment, and I think that the author understands perfectly the world and rules she has created. And now for the spoilers! Joan was so clueless that it became funny. She didn't notice A THING while Nick saw everything, and the only explanation she found was that Nick had been trained to be a monster hunter and that had stayed within him in the new timeline. Infinity Gate - M.R. Carey

  Merci à NetGalley et à la ME pour ce SP (English below) J'avais déjà lu (et abandonné) un livre de cet auteur, Celle qui a tous les dons , mais j'avais vu la critique de l'excellente booktubeuse Willow sur sa chaîne Books and Bao qui m'avait vraiment intriguée, donc quand j'ai vu Infinity Gate sur NetGalley, je n'ai pas hésité. L'histoire est narrée à la première personne sans qu'on ne sache qui est lae  narrateurice, qui va présenter trois personnes : Hadiz Tambuwal, Topaz Tourmaline et Essien Nkanika. On rencontre d'abord Hadiz qui, dans une vaine tentative de sauver le monde qu'elle habite, va découvrir par hasard l'existence d'autres mondes, d'autres Terres, ainsi que le Pandominium, un consortium d'un nombre incalculable de mondes parallèles. Le principe du Pandominium m'a paru fascinant ! Dans ce tome, on voit un peu son fonctionnement, surtout celui de son armée, et le début de la guerre contre un consortium de monde

Come Home Safe - Brian G. Buckmire

  I gave this book 4 stars because I feel it is very important in our society, whatever the country. The author wants to give keys to Black people as how to navigate a world where racism and police brutality are so prevalent. As a novel, it isn't a really captivating or groundbreaking but I still feel it is a read that every non-white person should have. White people too, of course, to really understand how pernacious racism is. I wish the book was better written and the dialogues were more realistic, especially for young teenagers, but it still gave a good idea of what can happen to any non white person in the public space.
